A historical method approach to teaching Kepler’s 2nd law

چکیده


 Kepler’s 2nd law, the law of areas, is usually taught in passing, between 1st and 3rd laws, to be explained “later on” as a consequence angular momentum conservation. The laws receive bulk attention; because paradigm-shift significance overhauling previous circular models with epicycles both Ptolemy Copernicus, its convenience standard curriculum having simple mathematical statement that allows for quantitative homework assignments exams. In this work I advance method teaching combines proclivity 3rd. approach rooted historical method, indeed, placed context, revolutionary 1st: does away epicycle, equant. This way also formulates “time=area” quantitatively, equation, M = E – e sin E, (relating mean anomaly M, eccentric eccentricity e), where left-hand side time right-hand area. doing so, it naturally paves finishing module an active learning computational exercise, instance, calculate timing location Mars’ next opposition. partially based on original thought, should thus best applied research-oriented students, such junior senior physics/astronomy undergraduates, or graduate students.
